Umalusi assures matriculants they won’t miss varsity registrations
Education quality assurer said the delay in the publication of matric results this year was attributable to Covid-19.

For the first time in decades, matric results will only be published three weeks into the new year.
In previous years, the Grade 12 final results have been published in the first week of the year making registration into higher education institutions easier for prospective students.
However, this year, results will be published on the 20th.
Despite this delay, education quality assurer Umalusi has said qualifying matriculants would not miss higher education admission deadlines.
Umalusi said tertiary institutions were cognisant of the delay in the release of matric results and would adjust their admission dates.
CEO Mafu Rakometsi said 75% of the standardisation process was complete, but the remaining 25%, which comes from school-based assessments, would take more time.
He added that the Covid-19 pandemic played a role in the delay because it forced a slight adjustment to programmes.
“We should remember that Covid-19 has shifted the programmes slightly, where the school calendar would have started earlier this year, that is, in 2022 started a bit late, and the exams were written a bit late, and so the marking. So, this pushed everything forward.”
Last week, basic education minister Angie Motshekga said matrics will have until February 3 to apply for the remarking or rechecking of exam paper while learners will have until February 8 to register for the 2023 May/June exams and March 15, if they want to sit for the 2023 October/November exams.
The department also published the 2023 school calendar, which opens on January 11, for inland school learners with teachers and administrators reporting for duty on Monday, January 9 to start their preparations.
The dates for the school terms are as follows:
Term 1: January 11 – March 24
Term 2: April 12 – June 23
Term 3: July 18 – September 29
Term 4: October 10 – December 13
