Hot weather intensifying toward the end of the week
The expected temperatures are higher than previously predicted, extending until Monday.

Temperatures are expected to soar for the rest of the week in near heatwave conditions, as the SA weather service (Saws) predicts the mercury will peak at 36°C on Sunday.
The World Meteorological Organisation defines a heatwave as five or more consecutive days of maximum temperatures 5°C or more above the area average. The average maximum temperature for January in Pretoria is 29°C.
Wednesday is expected to reach 34°C before slight cooling down on Thursday to 33°C. The weekend will bring with it intensifying heat at 34°C on Friday, 35°C on Saturday and 36°C on Sunday.
Hot weather will continue into next week with a maximum of 34°C expected on Monday, before partly cloudy weather brings with it relatively down to 30°C.
This time of year is historically the hottest, with the highest ever temperature of 42.7°C recorded on January 7 in 2016.
Survive the heat with these tips:
– Close the curtains. Keep your home cooler by blocking out the sun, especially when you are away during the day.
– Use sun protection when outdoors.
– Be aware of the elderly and small children who are more susceptible to the effects of heat.
– Consume lots of liquids to avoid dehydration.
– Remember your pets! You might be away from home during the worst of the heat, so make sure your pet will have somewhere to escape.
– Be cautious when exercising or doing heavy physical activities, especially outdoors. Athletes in particular must cover up for sun exposure and remember to stay hydrated.
