Local ward councillors visit Arcadia learners and the elderly

The young learners were also informed about the dangers of UV rays during the summertime.

Ward 110 and 92 councillors JB Bekker and Leanne de Jager recently visited the young learners at Arcadia primary school for a health awareness initiative.

The initiative, held on January 12, forms part of school outreach as learners across the country returned to class on January 11 for the 2023 academic year.

Bekker is also a Cansa volunteer and 98 UV armbands donated by Cansa were handed out to Grade 1 learners.

The young learners were also informed of the dangers of UV rays in the summertime.

Teachers at the school handed out the armbands to the excited young ones, who then all gathered to learn how the armbands worked.

“The armbands change colour (blue, pink and purple). When the smiley face on the band changes to a sad face, the learner has been exposed to dangerous rays indicating that they need to move to a shady area,” said De Jager.

Afterwards, Bekker and De Jager went to the Susan Strydom old age home.

Here Bekker handed out Cansa information pamphlets and CDs to the elderly and spoke to them about the health issues they may be facing.

Cansa is a non-profit that has been on the front lines of the battle against the disease since 1931, making strides in research and support programmes for patients.

“This initiative is highly welcomed and appreciated,” De Jager concluded.
