‘We are here to protect you against criminals,’ cops tell Mams learners
“Prison life is not good. In prison, you can only see the grey walls and you are told when to sleep and eat.”
“We are here to protect you against all criminals.”
This was the police’s message to learners when they visited the Japtha Mahlangu secondary school as part of their annual school safety programme on Tuesday morning.
“We also want to teach learners about safety issues and guide them about daily social interactions,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Daphne Maile.
Mamelodi police were accompanied by the Department of Correctional Services, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the local CPF, the Moses Mabida Foundation, Siyabangena and local religious groups.
She said learners must stop bullying by reporting it immediately to teachers. They must also wear their proper uniform.
“There is no need to fear the police,” she told learners, adding that the police are their “tireless” protectors.
Motivational speaker Mlungisi Zondi shared his story with the learners of spending 10 years in prison.
He said learners must choose their friends wisely because “there are those who befriend you while they intend to destroy your life”.
“Failure to listen to my parents and undisciplined behaviour took me straight to jail where I spent years behind bars,” said Zondi.
He said he tried committing suicide for a time in his life because of the life he was living.
“I urge you to avoid using illegal substances or selling them. It is time to take responsibility for your life.”
Nicodemus Seakamela from correctional services told learners that those who enjoy their freedom should safeguard it.
“Prison life is not good. In prison, you can only see the grey walls and you are told when to sleep and eat.”
Senior NPA prosecutor Advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman told learners to avoid criminal activities.
“There is a juvenile prison in Soshanguve for young offenders. I do not wish to see the government seeing a need to build another one in Mamelodi.”
