Hijacker jumps out of moving bakkie when he spots Akasia cops
The police telephone line is up and running again and the station can be contacted at 012 564 0700.
A suspected hijacker jumped out of a moving bakkie, which then crashed into a wall, when he saw the police coming for him in Akasia in the north of Pretoria last week.
The man ran into nearby bushes and managed to get away, according to Akasia police spokesperson Lindiwe Mabasa.
This was after the Toyota bakkie, which was hijacked on February 17 in Bedfordview, was tracked to The Orchards area on February 18.
The hijacked bakkie was found on Wolmarans Street, thanks to the station and the tracking department’s efforts. “The suspect is still at large; however, the rightful owner of the vehicle was notified and informed that it was taken to the police recovery centre.”
In a separate incident, Akasia also arrested two men who were in possession of suspected stolen diesel.

The arrests came after a route police visibility patrol in Hornsnek Road pulled off a bakkie carrying containers on February 19.
“Police searched the vehicle and found that the containers were filled with diesel.
“The driver was questioned on where the diesel came from. He told the officers that he had purchased it but failed to provide proof when requested,” said Mabasa.
The driver was instructed to drive and park the vehicle at the police station. He complied and, upon arrival, said that they couldn’t provide any proof of purchase.
Both men were arrested and charged with the possession of suspected stolen property.
Station commander Godfrey Zwane welcomed the successes.
Police urged community members to come forward if they have any information that could lead to the arrest of the hijacking suspect that fled.
The Akasia police station’s telephone line is up and running again and they can be contacted at 012 564 0700.
