Police warn against opening false criminal cases
Officers of Mamelodi family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit arrested a 57-year-old woman in Mamelodi West who allegedly forced her 11-year-old niece to open a false rape against her stepfather in 2021.
A 57-year-old woman in Mamelodi West, who allegedly forced her 11-year-old niece to open a false rape against her stepfather in 2021, was arrested by officers of Mamelodi family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit last week.
According to police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane, the stepfather was then arrested and appeared before the court.
However, further investigation revealed that the niece was influenced by her aunt to falsely accuse her stepfather of raping her.
“The police views opening of false cases in a serious light as it has an impact on state resources which should be directed to real emergencies,” said Mashiloane.
Perjury is a criminal offence which is punishable by law.
“According to a preliminary report, the woman allegedly forced her niece to open a false rape case in 2021,” said he said.
He said the investigation concluded and the aunt was subsequently arrested last week and expected to appear before the Mamelodi magistrate’s court soon.
Mashiloane urged community members to refrain from reporting false cases at police stations as this constitutes a crime and suspects will face the full force of the law when caught.
“The police have not yet discovered the motive behind the original case and will let the law take its course,” he concluded.
