School holiday programme educates Mams learners about hygiene, recycling
The centre is an advocate for climate change so it also taught the little ones about recycling and separating plastic, tins, paper from waste.
Mamelodi learners were taught about the importance of hygiene and encouraged to start taking care of their surroundings and environment.
The learners attended a school holiday programme organised by Thandanani Drop inn centre to keep busy and off the streets during the school holidays.
Kate Kekana of the centre said the school holiday programme is an ongoing programme which ran from March 27 until April 11.
The learners took part in a clean-up campaign whereby they cleaned the area around the centre.
“The learners were taught to always clean the things they use on a daily basis and their surroundings like their tables and chairs,” said Kekana.

She said since the centre is an advocate for climate change, it also taught the little ones about recycling and separating plastic, tins, paper from waste.
The learners were also taught about taking care of the environment and were encouraged to start their own food gardens at the back of their yards.
She added the objective of the programme was environmental advocacy, nature conservation and preservation, effects of illegal dumping and littering, recycling, adverse consequences and implications of global warming.
“Knowledge is power and this is our bid to empower our community with knowledge to acknowledge that we are a part of a bigger problem faced by the entire planet, global warming.
“To many it means nothing but the adverse effects are seen and felt across the world by humans, animals and nature,” she added.
The centre has also partnered with other NPOs and Tshwane metro’s NPO climate change and environmental management empowerment programme to address climate change.”
