Mams man (37) handed 10 years sentence for attempted murder

The murder-accused Edmond Mashaba stabbed the victim several times with a knife and escaped on foot.

Mamelodi police welcomed the hefty sentencing of a 37-year-old man who has been found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

This was as Edmond Mashaba was found guilty and sentenced by the Pretoria Regional Court last week Thursday for attempted murder and contravention of the Immigration Act, according to police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.

Mashiloane said in June 2022, the accused broke into a shack in Phomolong, Mamelodi East in the early hours of the morning and found a 46-year-old man sleeping.

“The victim was awakened by footsteps he heard inside his shack.

“The victim saw Mashaba with a knife in his hand,” said Mashiloane.

Mashaba then stabbed the victim several times and escaped the scene on foot.

Detective Sergeant Jack Diphofa was allocated to investigate the case and collect the necessary evidence.

Mashiloane said thanks to Diphofa’s investigation, Mashaba was arrested and made several court appearances until his sentence.

Mashaba was found guilty on two counts and sentenced to 10 years of direct imprisonment for attempted murder and 12 months of direct imprisonment for contravening the Immigration Act.

Mamelodi East station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo believed that this sentence will send a strong message to other people who think of committing similar offences.

“We commend the investigating officer for working tirelessly to ensure that justice is served,” Naidoo said.
