Eersterust dump overflowing
“Eersterust is not a dumping site. People think they can just bring their rubbish here to dump it and that’s not fair to the people living here at all,” says a frustrated resident.
Eersterust residents are frustrated with the state of their local municipal dumping site.
According to residents, the site is overflowing with refuse and people have started dumping outside it.
Resident Rosel de Ruyter said the problem has become a health hazard and fears it will only get worse over time.
“The smell is so bad that you can’t even go outside anymore,” she said.
“We have to keep our doors and windows shut to keep the smell out of our homes.”
De Ruyter added that the dumpsite has attracted dangerous animals such as baboons and rats and has become a health hazard.
“They are everywhere now and it is just chaos.
“Old people and young children living here can get really sick from this.”
De Ruyter said that they have contacted the metro several times, only for their complaints to fall on deaf ears.
Residents also complain that the dumpers are people from outside the community.
“Eersterust is not a dumping site.
“People think they can just bring their rubbish here to dump it and that’s not fair to the people living here at all.”
Residents have resorted to closing the dump to prevent the refuse pile from getting even further out of control.
The Tshwane metro had yet to comment by our time of publication.
