EFF calls on authorities to fumigate mosquito-infested Mabopane school

"The school management confirmed that the infestation is not limited to one area but is widespread across the entire school."

The Tshwane EFF has called on the government to fumigate the Reimolotswe primary school in Mabopane to fight a mosquito infestation.

“The presence of mosquitoes in and around the school poses a serious health risk to students and staff,” said party chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu.

“Mosquitoes are carriers of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and Zika virus.

“These diseases can cause severe illness and even death if not treated.

“So it is imperative that immediate action is taken to address this issue.”

Ramabodu said every child has the right to a safe and healthy learning environment.

“The school management confirmed that the infestation is not limited to one area but is widespread across the entire school.

“This means every child is at risk of being bitten or of contracting a disease.

“The school’s proximity to stagnant water sources means it is in an area with high mosquito activity.”

He said authorities should take charge and fumigate the school premises.

“This will help eliminate the mosquitoes and reduce the risk of disease transmission.”

The EFF also urged the relevant department to repair the road leading to the school.

“During rainy days there’s limited access to the school due to the road.

“This poses major challenges as both learners and teachers need to navigate muddy roads to get to school.”

Ramabodu said the road is not only a safety issue but affects both learners’ and teachers’ ability to get to school on time.

He said repairing the road is paramount as it will not only improve access to the school but also ensure the safety of all who use the road.

Ramabodu urged parents to take extra precautions when sending their children to school.

He said parents must make sure children wear long-sleeved clothing and use mosquito repellent.
