Police, suspects shoot it out in Pretoria after North West robbery

Police had been on the lookout for a Toyota Prado that was taken during the house robbery at a Brits household when the car was spotted at Vom Hagen Street and a high-speed chase and shootout ensued.

Police recovered a pistol and rifle plus ammunition in Pretoria on Tuesday after a high-speed chase and shootout with four suspects.

Provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the shootout ensued after police were called to respond to a house robbery in Brits, North West around 17:30 on Tuesday.

Masondo said from information received from a complainant, police knew a Toyota Prado, along with other goods, had been taken during the robbery so they were on the lookout.

He said police later intercepted the suspects on the R80 towards Pretoria CBD after a tip-off from tracking company Tracker.

Masondo said when the suspects were spotted, they sped off but the police kept the pursuit.

“The suspects sped off, leading to a high-speed chase and shootout between the police and the suspects.”

He said the law enforcement officials from the Pretoria flying squad and highway patrol chased the car until Vom Hagen Street where they forced it to a stop.

“As the police stopped the suspects who were already in Pretoria, the suspects fired shots and jumped out of the vehicle,” Masondo said, adding that a shootout on foot ensued as the suspects ran away.

“They were eventually arrested.”

He said upon searching the suspects and their vehicle, police recovered firearms – a pistol and rifles – with scores of ammunition.

“The vehicle and items that were reportedly taken during the house robbery were also recovered,” said Masondo.

He said the suspects would be charged with house robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property, among other crimes.
