Police on the lookout for robbery suspect

Police are asking the public to come forward with any information regarding a fifth robbery suspect eluding arrest after a high-speed chase and shootout recently.

Police are asking the public to come forward with any information regarding a fifth robbery suspect eluding arrest after a high-speed chase and shootout recently.

The incident in question occurred last week when police intercepted a house robbery in progress in Brits, North West.

A white Toyota Prado was stolen from the house and thanks to Cartrack, they located the vehicle travelling down the R80 toward the CBD.

Members of the Flying Squad and Highway Patrol Unit had spotted the car in Pretoria West on Vom Hagen and Rebecca streets.

“After the vehicle was spotted, members activated their sirens and blue lights in an attempt to pull over the vehicle,” said Flying Squad spokesperson, Sgt Legodi.

“The suspects refused to stop resulting in a chase in which the suspects shot several rounds at the police. Members retaliated by shooting at the robbed vehicle’s wheels in an attempt to stop the suspects.”

The suspects soon stopped and abandoned the vehicle running in different directions.

Police managed to apprehend four suspects while the fifth managed to escape into a nearby forest. One of the suspects is reported to have been shot in the left calf.

“Upon searching the suspects and the vehicle, police recovered firearms – a pistol and rifles – with scores of ammunition. The vehicle and items taken from the house during the robbery were also recovered,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

“The suspects were charged with house robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of stolen property among other crimes.”
