Two killed, four injured in Atteridgeville school gas explosion

Two bodies were found while firefighters were extinguishing the fire.

Tshwane emergency services recovered two badly burned bodies from a school west of Pretoria following a gas explosion.

The explosion happened at the Zodwa special school on Maunde Street in Atteridgeville around 10:00 on Wednesday according to Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

Mabaso said four injured people were also taken to Kalafong hospital.

“It is alleged that the four and two deceased are employees of a contractor that was doing repair work on two container classrooms,” he said.

He said when firefighters arrived on the scene the container classroom was collapsed and on fire.

He said they were informed that one person was still trapped in the burning rubble.

“The fire was subsequently extinguished, and the scene handed over to police for further investigation of circumstances that might have led to the explosion and fire.”
