Operation Shanela sweeps 347 suspects for various crimes away in Hammanskraal

The operation entailed high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

Operation Shanela swept 347 suspects for various crimes and one unlicensed firearm away in Hammanskraal.

According to the police spokesperson Warrant-Officer Johan Van Dyk the operation to put more boots on the ground was under the guidance of Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela.

“Team Tshwane have once again put their boots on the ground and demonstrated their unwavering commitment to combating crime,” said Van Dyk.

He said this operation was executed with the coordination of various agencies, including the departments of home affairs, labour, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police (TMPD) as well as Tracker, crime prevention wardens, CPFs from the respective police stations and local councillors.

“Additionally, members of different SAPS stations and units within the Tshwane policing area played pivotal roles.”

The operation entailed high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets and Tshwane detectives apprehended various suspects.

“Among them were 61 individuals involved in gender-based violence, four charged with murder, three with attempted murder, two involved in armed robbery, and five for rape.”

He said the operation was supported by three uniformed groups comprising two compliance teams and a roadblock group.

“Illegal liquor outlets were inspected and subsequently all three were closed, and 186 200ml of liquor were confiscated.”

He said the seized liquor will be disposed of once the criminal cases have concluded.

Van Dyk said two suspects were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes, and 3 200 loose cigarettes were confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal case.

“The police found 179 bags and 37 balls of dagga and subsequently two suspects were arrested for [their] possession.”

He added that 40 undocumented immigrants were detained and will undergo deportation proceedings once legal matters are finalised.

He said six premises, 990 people, and 749 vehicles were searched.

He said one suspect was arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and 138 Aarto infringement notices issued to the value of R60 000.

Department of Labour inspected 15 businesses and subsequently issued nine contravention, two improvement and two prohibition notices.

All the arrested individuals will appear in court.

The firearm will undergo ballistic analysis to determine if it was used in the commission of other offences.

Major-General Nengovhela extended his appreciation and congratulations to all members who selflessly participated in the operation.
