Passengers robbed, raped in the north

Multiple tyre spiking incidents have been reported in the area.

Multiple cases have been opened at the Pretoria North police station after four men robbed, raped and assaulted minibus passengers on Friday, October 27.

Police have opened four cases of rape, multiple robberies and one of assault after a minibus was forced to stop on the N4 near the R556 off-ramp after hitting a rock.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johann van Dyk said the victims reported that they were on their way to Mamelodi for an event when the driver saw a stone in the road and swerved to avoid it but in vain.

“The driver continued driving until he smelt oil and stopped the vehicle to check the damage and seven passengers in the vehicle got out to assist him.

“The passengers then heard gunshots and four men emerged from the bush, they assaulted and robbed the passengers of their cellphones and catering equipment.”

Van Dyk said the driver ran for help.

“The suspects dragged the women to the bush, raped them and forced men to rape the women as well. The suspects then left on foot.”

The R556 has been a crime hotspot for years as tyre-spiking incidents have risen.

Motorists are urged to be vigilant and avoid that road at night.

“When your vehicle is giving trouble, try and drive to a safe place and seek help from there.

“A tyre rim is replaceable, a life isn’t,” he said.
