Metro warns against tampering with critical infrastructure in Hammanskraal

Tampering with gas and water pipelines is dangerous and can lead to catastrophic outcomes such as loss of life, explosion, flooding and intensive damage to property.

Tampering with critical gas and water infrastructure can lead to a disastrous outcome, warns the metro.

This warning comes after some unknown vandals tampered with Rand Water and Sasol water and gas pipeline markings in Sekampaneng Ridge near Suurman in Hammanskraal.

MMC for community safety Grandi Theunissen said it is alleged the infrastructure was vandalised during the theft of ferrous metals.

He said that these acts can lead to catastrophic outcomes.

“The risks associated with the destruction of high-pressure water and gas lines, as well as electricity infrastructure, are severe and may lead to catastrophic outcomes, including flooding, explosions, loss of life and significant property damage.”

He added that it can also cause prolonged power and water shortages.

“We therefore urge residents to refrain from vandalising infrastructure belonging to Sasol, Rand Water and any other vital service providers.”

Community members are strongly encouraged to promptly report any instances of infrastructure vandalism to their local police or relevant authorities.

“Residents can report vandalism to Sasol on 0800 212 260, Rand Water 0860 10 10 60, Eskom 0800 112 722 and Tshwane metro police cable theft unit 012 358 1550.”

Theunissen said by working together and taking responsibility, major incidents such as the recent gas explosion in Johannesburg CBD and the burst water pipe in Mamelodi in August 2012 can be prevented.

He said the city is fully committed to safeguarding vital infrastructure.

Should an incident occur, residents are reminded to contact emergency services on its toll-free line 107.

For Gauteng ambulance service, residents can contact 10177 toll-free from a landline or 112 toll-free from a cellphone.
