Ubuntu in action as Centurion school delivers boxes of hope

Parents and learners have contributed items that were distributed to children in need, showing the importance of community support and shared responsibility.

On September 9, the SPARK Centurion school community came together for the school’s #100BoxesforMandela initiative.

Makepi Thabethe, assistant principal at SPARK Centurion, said it is a powerful and practical way to embody SPARK Schools’ core value of Service, as well as SPARK Centurion’s unique core value of dignity.

“The donation handover served as a reminder that the school’s commitment to community extends beyond the classroom,” added Thabethe.

With the start of the third term on July 21, scholars in Grades R to 7 began contributing non-perishable items, while parents donated pre-loved clothing.

According to Thabethe, this collective effort not only teaches scholars the importance of giving back, but also helps them understand how their actions positively impact the lives of others.

On the day of the initiative, the school delivered the donations to its long-standing partner, Dimphonyana tsa Lapeng, a children’s centre based in Olievenhoutbosch.

Based on the overwhelming support from the parents, the school was able to extend its reach to provide 20 care parcels to scholars at the nearby Seshegong Secondary School, also in Olievenhoutbosch.

“Both centres received the donations with deep gratitude, and the school is proud to have embodied the spirit of ubuntu as a community,” said Thabethe.

He continued, quoting Nelson Mandela, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is the difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”.
