Music lovers celebrate cultural harmony at Musaion
Audiences were treated to a rich blend of South African, Dutch, and Italian music when the Konsertina en Trekklavier is GROOT concert took place at the Musaion Theatre on Sunday.
The Musaion Theatre at the University of Pretoria was filled with melody and emotion on Sunday afternoon, as music lovers gathered for the Konsertina en Trekklavier is GROOT concert.
It was a vibrant celebration of sound, language, and tradition.
The programme offered something for everyone, featuring traditional South African songs, Dutch folk pieces, and well-loved opera numbers.
One of the audience members, Fincent Willighagen, said it was a feast for the senses, where Afrikaans, Dutch, and Italian lyrics were intertwined, and a variety of instruments were featured. “Including the accordion and concertina and creating a beautifully layered sound,” he said.
The concert aimed to showcase the richness of both local and European musical traditions, highlighting how these diverse influences can come together harmoniously on one stage.
Pieces such as Heimwee, made famous by the legendary Mimi Coertse, and the classic O Sole Mio were among the audience favourites.
The combination of operatic vocals with the warm tones of the accordion and concertina brought an emotional depth that captivated the crowd.
Another audience member, Phemelo Morake praised the performance, describing it as “a moving musical journey that bridges cultures through sound”.
As the final notes echoed through the Musaion Theatre, it was clear that the concert had achieved its goal of uniting different musical worlds and reminding everyone of the timeless power of music to connect people across languages and borders.
