Local centre engages children with learning, fun, and career talks
A holiday programme in Mamelodi keeps children engaged with career expos, robotics workshops, indigenous games, and more, ensuring safety, inspiration, and fun during the school break.
A school holiday programme kicked off on Monday by exposing Mamelodi children to a range of career opportunities at the Thandanani Drop Inn Centre.
The career expo was held in partnership with Super Sun and is called the ‘Super Sun Super Together Children’s Holiday Programme’.
Kate Kekana from the Thandanani Drop Inn Centre said that Mamelodi children will be kept off the streets with a range of activities as part of a programme aimed at keeping them safe during the school holidays.
Kekana continued, saying that they have invited different companies to talk to the children about career opportunities.
She said inspirational speakers will guide them on how to become qualified for careers. The companies represented at the expo included Fundi Math, Waltloo Big Save, and Super Sun.
Zoe Mahlangu from Thandanani Centre, who runs the school holiday programme, takes care of the children at the centre. Some of the children are as young as five.
“With a wide variety of daily themes and activities, the programme is designed to stimulate young minds, promote healthy living, and provide a safe space for learning and fun,” she said.
Mahlangu said one of the core aims of this holiday initiative is to ease the concerns of parents who fear for their children’s safety when they are out of school and at risk of exposure to bad influences.
“We are offering a well-structured and diverse programme. Thandanani Drop Inn Centre not only keeps children safe but also provides them with valuable life experiences and social skills,” she said.
The holiday programme kicked off on Monday with a career expo, followed by a robotics workshop and indigenous games at Lynnwood Library on Tuesday.
Wednesday features an art showcase at the centre, a fun day on Thursday, and lastly, Friday is dedicated to visiting heritage sites around Tshwane. The programme also focuses on physical and mental well-being.
The organisation is committed to building a community where every child feels supported, inspired, and protected.
Mahlangu concluded, saying that the holiday programme stands as an example of how local initiatives can make a difference in the lives of young people.
