Hazelwood Food ACC Market welcomes back visitors
After more than a decade of growth and change, the popular Hazelwood Food ACC Market has returned to its roots as it hosted its first market of the year on Saturday.
The Hazelwood Food ACC Market officially kicked off the new year on Saturday, welcoming visitors back to Lynnwood, where the market first started 14 to 15 years ago.
Market hosts Daniël Ronquest Vos and Jean-Pierre Verster said the journey of the market has come ‘full circle’.
Vos said the market began in Lynnwood, moved to Hazelwood, then to the Greenlyn Shopping Centre, then the Pretoria High School Old Boys’ Club, and has now returned to its original area.
“About 13 years ago, the market expanded beyond food because of the community response,” Vos said.
“An arts, crafts and culture section was added, giving rise to the Hazelwood Food ACC Market as it is known today.”
Vos said sport is included as part of culture, which sets the market apart from others.
“While women shop, men can enjoy sport on screen and have a beer. It creates a space where everyone feels included,” he said.
The market usually hosts between 65 and 70 arts and crafts vendors, as well as 40 to 50 food stalls.
Fewer stalls were present this weekend, as it was the first market of the year.
Jean Pierre said the focus has always been on authenticity.
“We prioritise handmade products. We don’t allow factory-made items because the market is about supporting local creativity,” he said.
The Hazelwood Food ACC Market takes place every Saturday and has consistently drawn strong public support.
Pierre said it has also gained international recognition, being rated among the top six tourist markets in Africa on TripAdvisor.
“We are looking forward to another successful year as the market continues to celebrate food, art, culture and community.”
