Tiny uniforms, big smiles as school welcomes its new Grade 1s

Excitement, laughter and a few nervous smiles filled the corridors of Laerskool Danie Malan as its newest Grade 1 learners officially began their school journey.

Dressed in crisp uniforms and clutching school bags almost as big as themselves, the young learners were warmly welcomed into their classrooms as the school opened its gates for the new academic year.

The week began with an induction programme a day before schools officially reopened, allowing learners to familiarise themselves with their teachers, classrooms and new routines.

Another learner, Kaylin Wood, confidently shared her big dreams, saying she wants to travel the whole world by being an air hostess.

“I want to travel and help people on aeroplanes,” she says with a smile, clearly enjoying her first day at school.

Leago Mojapelo says she is happy to have made friends, adding that the induction was fun as it prepared her for the first day. She also wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

Teachers ensured that each child felt safe and supported, guiding them patiently through the first steps of their educational journey.

School principal Hettie Smith welcomes the Grade 1 learners and their parents, encouraging the young learners to work hard, be kind and always do their best.

“We are proud to welcome our new learners to the Danie Malan family. This is the foundation of their future. If they work hard, listen and believe in themselves, they can achieve great things.”

Clementine Ramauswa says she is especially hopeful that her child will succeed in learning Afrikaans.

“He is the only one in our family bloodline who will be learning Afrikaans, so this is very special for us.

“I am just happy that he is finally going to school and starting this important chapter of his life.”
