Dear Editor,
It would appear one cannot open any newspaper nowadays, listen to the radio or even browse your Facebook feed without encountering several reports about crime. These stories usually cover what happened during these episodes in detail, much to the amusement of the criminals who committed these crimes.
Criminals actually boast and brag to each other about these deeds and see it as a compliment and an achievement when their crime is reported in different media and publications.
Instead of addressing the issue at hand and looking at means to prevent such tragedies in the future, fear is created.
I following a group online that asks the question: Why is there still so much crime in South Africa with all the available technology? One reason is that homeowners, businesses and property managers do not have adequate control of their security. They need a thorough risk assessment.
When people are questioned about their security they usually point to their alarm system or indicate that their firearm is all they need.
Whether armed or not, they are simply no match for a criminals that use the element of surprise to their advantage.
There are several success stories where people were able to minimise damage, injury and loss because they were in control of their security.
The goal of this letter is to create awareness that there are security solutions and I hereby urge the editors of various publications to explore this further and bring to light the necessity and benefits of risk assessment.
