Letter to the Editor
I refer to your informative report (Centurion Rekord 22 April) on a very relevant issue ‘ … a day in the life of an innovative recycler’ – which touches on several important issues concerning the wider community – job creation, the environment and human habitation.
The creation of job opportunities is the greatest challenge facing South Africans. Here are examples – according to the report – of entrepreneurial and innovative individuals – waste re-cyclers – attempting to make an honest living in a tough job environment. They contribute to a cleaner environment and reduce the demands on Tshwane’s limited landfill sites. The downside is the totally inadequate storage and living conditions under which they work and live – no shelter, no ablution facilities – and the impact that this has on neighbouring properties.
What is needed is a vigorous programme of action by the municipality to properly accommodate and assist recyclers pursuing their activities in a clean and healthy environment. This is where progress can be made in job creation. Support the small entrepreneur.
