Clean sweep against Scotland for SA’s hockey girls

The South African woman's hockey team won the series 5-0 against Scotland that was played at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria last week.

The South African national women’s hockey team showed no mercy to their Scottish counterparts last week in the TUT hockey stadium in Pretoria West.

Hot on the heels of their 2-1 series victory over Belgium in Cape Town, the South Africa women took on Scotland in five test matches at the Tshwane University of Technology hockey stadium in Pretoria.

Sulette Damons and her team won the first Test 5-3, the second 4-2, the third 4-0 and the fourth 5-0 to secure a series whitewash.

With the need to strengthen the player base, several of South Africa’s most seasoned players have been left out of this leg of head coach Giles Bonnet’s 2014 campaign that has as its highlights the World Cup and Commonwealth Games.

The series win over Scotland showed that South African women’s hockey is healthy and strong and that the management has a strong base of players for their line-up for these two tournaments.

One of the stars of the week was Nicolene Terblanche, the Pretorian whose sheer energy and all-round contribution helped to motivate her teammates too. She was also part of the team that was announced after the tournament to represent the South Africa women’s hockey team in a five test series against world number two Argentina in Mar del Plata, Argentina later this month.
