Sundowns get the bragging rights

Mamelodi Sundowns walked away with the bragging rights after they beat SuperSport United 3-1 in the Tshwane Derby at Atteridgeville’s Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night. Downs cruised to their first win in five Absa Premiership games, having come from being a goal down to beat Matsatsantsa a Pitori in an exciting match.

SuperSport’s goal was scored by former Downs’ attacking midfielder Dove Wome in the 17th minute. But 15 minutes later, the Brazilians made it 1-1 with a goal by Khama Billiat. Sundowns’ young player Themba Zwane scored the second goal on the stroke of half time. Zwane was one of the better performers of Pitso Mosimane’s charges as he looked lively down the flanks.

In the 74th minute Teko Modise added the finishing touch for Downs when he scored the third goal. It was also Modise’s third goal in the league this year, which in essence, extended Sundowns’ unbeaten record to eight, dating back to the end of August.

Having last registered a victory back in September, Sundowns looked eager to get to the final whistle with their lead intact. SuperSport struggled to replicate their performance from the final of the Telkom Knockout weekend, when they were crowned champions after beating Platinum Stars at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

For Matsatsantsa a Pitori it was their second league defeat on the trot, leaving Gordon Igesund’s team in 11th place. SuperSport have 15 points while the win put Sundowns at 20 points.

In their next match, Matsatsantsa a Pitori will take on Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The match will kick off at 15:00. Sundowns will battle it out against Free State Stars at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday at 20:15.
