Sevens rugby
Round 3 of the HSBC Sevens World Series takes place this weekend at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. South Africa is one of 16 internationals participating in the two-day tournament, on 13 and 14 December. The Blitzboks are defending their home crown and will attempt to become the first SA side to win back-to-back home titles.
Last weekend, the team won the Dubai Sevens tournament in style after outplaying Australia in the final and beating arch rivals New Zealand and Argentina in the semi-final and quarterfinals respectively.
Springbok Sevens captain, Kyle Brown, said the team was delighted to be back in South Africa to play in their home tournament. “The PE fans gave us a fantastic welcome when we arrived on Monday night and the turnout today was absolutely amazing. There are a couple of new guys in the squad and they were absolutely delighted by the amazing turnout and passionate support we experienced today.”
SARU and the event organising partners have again laid on a fantastic entertainment programme for the event, with well-known local artists MiCasa, Jimmy Nevis and DJ Fresh set to add their unique showbiz performances to the Sevens extravaganza.

Cricket
The people of Pretoria will have the privilege to see the first test match between the Proteas and the West Indies from next Wednesday at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Play will start daily at 10:00 and the series will eventually consist of three tests. The Sir Vivian Richards Trophy will be at stake.
The Windies will return to Centurion on 28 Januarie for the last match of the tour. This will be the fifth one-day test. They made a solid start to their test preparation in their three-day tour match against a South Africa Invitational XI at Willowmoore Park in Benoni the past week.
Boxing
Danie Venter from Pretoria will face Ukrainian cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist on December 13 at the Sport Palace in Kiev, Ukraine. The bout will take place under the auspices of K2 Promotions.
Venter’s opponent is a 27-year-old southpaw who stands 6-foot-3 in his socks. He was last in action for a seventh-round knockout of Daniel Bruwer in October. Venter is the current WBF cruiserweight champion.
The fight will not be broadcast on television in South Africa.
