Downs claim bragging rights in rain affected derby
Sundows opened a 10 point lead in the premier league thanks to a 2-0 over Supersport United in a rain affected match.
Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their unbeaten run in the league when they trashed Supersport United 2-0 on Tuesday night at the Lucas Moripe stadium.
Sundowns extended their unbeaten run to 18 games in this rain-affected Tshwane derby while Matsatsantsa remained 11th in the log.
Goals from Asavela Mbekile and Khama Billiat stretched the Brazilians lead at the top of the standings to 10 points with only eight games to go in the premier league.
The derby started with ‘Downs making most of the play as Billiat created problems for the Matsatsantsa defence.
As the match heated up, referee Daniel Bennett called a 36 minutes adjournment of the game due to lightning.
‘Downs wasted little time when play resumed going on a swift counter attack. Leonardo Castro found Mbekile in space and the midfielder chipped over Ronwan Williams to open the scoring in the 38th minute.
In the second half, Supersport United had an opportunity to draw level when Thuso Phala delivered a cross to Kingston Nkhatha. But the striker who was unmarked, did what he does best, failed to hit the target.
Matsatsantsa and Nkhatha were made to rue those misses as ‘Downs finished the game off through Billiat, who received a champaigne pass from Castro. The Zimbabwean calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.
Both teams now turn their eye to the Nedbank Cup.
