“I have never been to jail in South Africa or even close to it and I don’t think humans should be treated like that.”
Multiply Titans cricket team captain Albie Morkel recently shared his experiences of being arrested for “weapons smuggling” in Mozambique earlier this year.
The 37-year-old all-rounder told the Dan Nicholl Show on SuperSport last week that he had been arrested in Mozambique in July.
Morkel said his four-day tour had gone well until he got to the airport.

He said airport security had found leftover ammunition from a hunt in his bag.
“They picked up my ammunition in my bag, which I obviously didn’t know about,” Morkel said.
“With the language barrier, things escalated very quickly into a big mess. I told the other guys in our party to go ahead and board and I’ll just sort this problem out and catch the later flight.”
But what was supposed to be a trip to court to sort out the problem, ended up being a stay in prison because “the court was already closed for the day at that time”.
“They pulled AK-47s on us and it turned into a very ugly scene,” he said.

Morkel was taken to Tete provincial prison.
“I have never been to jail in South Africa or even close to it but I don’t think humans should be treated like that.”
The Pretoria-based cricketer said he was lucky to find two inmates kind enough to help him out during his two-day stay in the prison.
