Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is facing a charge of assault in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, police confirmed.
Mosimane is accused of punching a security officer following Sundowns’ 3-3 draw against Amazulu in Umlazi during an ABSA Premier League clash on Sunday.
Police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said a case of common assault was opened by a 39-year-old man at the Umlazi police station.
“The victim, who is a security guard, opened a case against the coach. Investigations are ongoing and no arrest was made,” he said.
Following Downs’ draw with Amazulu at the King Zwelithini stadium, two supporters invaded the pitch, however, security guards managed to remove them off the field.
According to reports, Mosimane intervened and displayed his dissatisfaction on how the fans were being treated by the guards. That led to a scuffle in which Mosimane allegedly punched one of the security guards.
Sundowns were set to release a statement about the matter in the coming days.
PSL acting chief executive officer Mato Madlala said she was waiting for the report of the match commissioner.
Sundowns fan Senzo Mathenjwa said the security guard may have been forced to open a case against the coach.
“He’s been influenced by people around him hoping to be compensated. I don’t believe Pitso did assault him that way. Sundowns must just support the coach and allow the justice system to make a decision. If he has to pay a fine he must do that in court then. This is a motivated case,” he said in a tweet.
“Nothing is being shifted on Pitso. A case of assault as a result of his actions. He can clear his name in court if he is clean. Every action has a reaction. David Thidiela [chairman of Black Leopards] is also gonna get punished for his contact and abuse towards [referee] Victor Hlungwani,” tweeted Theloniuos Jaha.
Sundowns failed to capitalise on the two-match advantage they had over their rivals. Before Sunday, Downs had only played three matches, drawing two and winning one. The weekend draw saw the team remain ninth on the log with a few matches in hand.
The Pretoria team has remained in KZN for their midweek clash against Golden Arrows.
