SPORT: Pretoria schools embrace mini-cricket festival
There was great excitement among the children as the matches kicked off.
There was great excitement as schools around Centurion kicked off the new cricket season by competing in a mini-cricket festival in Valhalla recently.
More than 200 children, in the age group 5-15, took part at the regional KFC mini-cricket festival at the Valhalla baseball field.
The schools included SA College, Uitsig Primary, Empro Academy, Vhalliespark Primary and Fleur Primary.
Mini-cricket co-ordinator Kagiso Masubelele, of the Northerns cricket union, said that the goal of the event was to get children active and have fun outdoors.

Local KFC franchise staff members from around Centurion were on hand to lend support and encouragement to children playing at the festival.
Gunret Foods owners and operators of 40 KFC outlets throughout the country have sponsored KFC mini-cricket T-shirts, balls, bats and equipment to the value of R98 000 at various regional festivals this year.
“We are very proud to be part of the programme, which encourages children to live active lifestyles while learning the game of cricket,“ said KFC spokesperson Burt Gunning.
“It allows all those involved to grow, develop and shine,”
Gunning said KFC was committed to giving back to the community and creating platforms that bring children closer to their cricketing heroes through the programme.
KFC has been a sponsor of the programme since 2010 and will continue until 2025.

Since 2010, the programme has grown from 83 683 children getting active to more than 120 000 in 2018.
Some of them have participated as ball boys and girls as well as participating in the coin toss and national anthems at the KFC T20 international games.
The KFC mini-cricket will get a chance to face the Proteas during the world cup preparations on Sunday when they host Zimbabwe in the first of a three one-day international series
