SPORT: ‘Frustrated’ Lebese could leave Downs
Lebese is yet to play a single this season in Sundowns colours.
Mamelodi Sundowns winger George Lebese could be on his way out from the club, having failed to play a single game this season.
The Mamelodi-born star has struggled to find game time since his high profile move from Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the 2017/17 season. He said the reason he joined the Pretoria club was to fulfil his dreams of playing for his boyhood club.
In his first season for Downs, Lebese made 15 appearances, scoring two goals in the process.
This season has been a different story, however, having failed to even make the 18 men squad in some of the games.
According to KickOff Magazine, Lebese’s agent Steve Kapeluschnik was in talks with Downs regarding the issue of game time.
“We are talking to Sundowns to see whether the club was prepared to let Lebese get some game-time and they’ve been quite positive,” Kapeluschnik told KickOff.com.
“So we just have to see what happens. He is frustrated because he is not playing. We’ve told them that and they are open to the idea of him going to get some game-time.”
In recent times, reports emerged that Lebese could return to Kaizer Chiefs, where he made more than 150 appearances and scored 22 times.
Kapeluschnik, however, told KickOff Magazine that no teams have shown interest lately, as the season has just kicked off three months ago.
“The guy is frustrated and they understand that … but we haven’t started looking.”
The 29-year-old player is running out of time. With the likes of Aubrey Ngoma, Themba Zwane, Anthony Laffor and Gaston Sirino all fighting for that left-wing spot, it will be extremely difficult for him to feature regularly.
Fans on social media have been very sympathetic toward Lebese.
Bongani Nkamula said: “I really feel for George Lebese. I hope you go pass this difficult process and find a new home where you can be happy. Sorry man.”
