Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau has been honoured in Belgium’s second tier.

Tau, who is playing for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, was named Proximus League Player of the Year after helping his side to third in the league.

The 24-year-old Bafana Bafana international was in excellent form in his maiden season in Europe scoring 11 times, making 13 assists in 33 matches.

After having issues with his UK work permit, the former Clapham High School pupil was loaned out to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

In his last season with Downs, Tau was crowned Absa Premiership Player of the Season and Player’s Player of the Season for the 2017/2018 campaign

Having secured back-to-back awards in SA and Belgium, many football fans believe the Bafana star will be in the colours of Brighton come next season.

“I’d like to say thank you to everyone who voted for me. A big thank you to Union St Gilloise players and staff for the achievement I share with all. To the supporters, thank you for the warm welcome to the club,” Tau said in a tweet.

Social media was full of praise for Tau, who recently earned his BCom degree.

Thembinkosi Madlala tweeted that Tau could reach new heights.

“Percy Tau takes himself decently serious. The guy recently graduated with BCom degree, now he is among the best football players. To him education is a hobby and football is a career. Can he quickly reach the level of Sadio Mané?” he said.

“Imagine winning the player of the season twice consecutively but in different leagues and continents. Wow, congratulations to Percy Tau, we are proud and inspired. Now it’s all up to our Bafana Bafana to make his EPL dream a reality faster,” Julius Mnisi tweeted.
