Assupol TuksCricket has been crowned the winners of the 2014 edition of the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals champions.

After a tough semi-final against the university team from India, that went down to the final over, the winning runs were hit off the first ball of the over to secure their spot in the final of the tournament.

This was the first time South Africa and South African Universities were represented at this exciting T20 tournament and the Tuks team played in South African colours. Assupol TuksCricket came up against the West Indian team, whom they had beaten in their final pool game earlier in the week.

With the final promising to have all the makings of a good contest, Assupol TuksCricket won the toss and elected to bat, putting up a good score and making the West Indian team have to chase 189 runs to win. The Tuks team came out firing with tight bowling and fielding, putting pressure on the opposition.

With the West Indies requiring 45 runs off the last over, the writing was on the wall, and Assupol TuksCricket were crowned winners and World Champions, representing South Africa in this international tournament.

This is an amazing achievement, to complete the already successful last three years of the Tuks Cricket Club, having won the National Cricket Club championship earlier in the year, the National USSA tournament in December 2013, and being crowned Team of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards two weeks ago.

Congratulations must also go out to the Head Coach Pierre de Bruyn, the various other TuksCricket coaches who played a role – the management and administration of the club, the sport science and medical staff who supported the team in its preparation. Assupol TuksCricket once again showed what the winning culture at the University of Pretoria and TuksSport is about, and this should prove to the South African community that SA teams could compete in – and win – world finals and championships.
