SuperSport United escaped with a 1-0 victory against the Premier Soccer League’s newly-promoted side Chippa United on Tuesday night at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
Matsatsantsa a Pitori bagged their first points of the season thanks to Clayton Daniels’ 25th minute penalty. The penalty was awarded to the host team after a handball from Chippa’s Bheki Zunga in the eighteen area box.
Despite the loss, the Chilly Boys were the better in the match after employing scintillating counterattacks. The Eastern Cape side were too hot to be handled by the host team but wasted many chances to put a goal into the back of the net.
Both teams finished the match without two of their key players. Victor Gomes, who was the referee of the match, red-carded Matsatsantsa’s Prince Nxumalo and Chippa’s Chris Komane for challenging each other with raised studs during the 65th minute of play.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and the Togolese international Dove Wome made his debut for Matsatsantsa. He was busy in the opening stages of the game. He flashed a strike at goal in the 10th minute which was superbly saved by Chippa’s goalkeeper, Tshepo Motsoeneng. In the 27th minute Chippa got their first real chance on goal when their captain Andile Mbenyane tested Ronwen Williams, but the Bafana Bafana keeper made a good save.
The match was characterised by impressive attacks. The Chilli Boys nearly escaped with an equaliser in the 87th minute when Siyabonga Zulu’s free Kick was denied by the post.
Tuesday’s loss for the Chilli Boys – which is coached by former Orlando Pirates mentor Kostadin Papiki – will be a bitter pill to swallow. Swanky Boys’ coach Cavin Johnson will be relieved that his charges have managed to register their first win the league since it commenced during the weekend.
In other PSL results for SuperSport during their first game of the season, Matsatsantsa were beaten 1-0 by Bidvest Wits during the weekend. And Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 with Maritzburg United at Loftus Versfeld stadium while University of Pretoria lost 1-0 against Polokwane City at Tuks Stadium.
