The annual Tuks open tennis tournament took place recently and not only did spectators get see some great tennis, but TuksTennis in association with Gauteng North Tennis Association (GNTA) development programme kick-started their District 6 school initiative project to develop tennis in the local area. The men’s- and ladies’ finals were played on the last day and these games delivered tennis of the highest quality. In the men’s singles final the promising young tennis star Jordan Sauer faced Heinrich Heyl, an alumni Tuks player. Their match was a nail-biting contest with Heyl securing the title, Tuks Open 2014 winner. Sauer however did not let this get him down and won the men’s double final with his brother Jarryd Sauer. They played against Nikhil Joshi and Raul Stevens. The ladies’ finals were just as exciting with the favourites, the two sisters Lee and Zani Barnard, going head to head for the single’s title. In the end Lee won the title, Tuks Open 2014 women’s single winner. These two sisters did not let their singles battle get in their way and faced Caitlin Herb and Casandra Metzer in the doubles final with the Barnard sisters taking the title. On the final Saturday of the tournament, TuksTennis manager Andre de Beer and Tuks open organiser Anesta Nel hosted and presented their first development project in association with GNTA. This District 6 school initiative project started a long term relationship with schools in district 6 to empower them to start their own tennis programmes at their respective schools.
