Both the Blue Bulls' men’s and woman’s teams were crowned national sevens rugby champions last weekend at the SARU Interprovincial Sevens tournament at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

The Blue Bulls men’s and women’s teams showed their class on Saturday at the SARU Interprovincial Sevens at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit as they took top honours to round off a fantastic weekend for the Pretoria union.

The Blue Bulls men defeated Western Province 38-29 and the women pipped Western Province 24-22 in their respective Cup Finals in what was a thrilling tournament.

In the men’s division the Leopards defeated Eastern Province 29-24 in a sudden-death playoff to win the Plate final after finishing the match 24-24 at full time, while SWD won the Bowl Final and Boland won the Shield final.

In the Women’s section Free State won the Plate Final with a convincing 19-7 victory against the SA Students, while Eastern Province won the Bowl Final and the Blue Bulls XV won the Shield Final.

The Blue Bulls men’s side opened up their campaign with a 19-17 victory against the Pumas Lowveld and then defeated the Falcons 42-0 and the Limpopo Blue Bulls 26-0 to finish the opening day on Friday unbeaten.

This earned them a place in the Cup Quarter-final against Eastern Province, who they defeated 24-14. They went on to beat hosts, the Pumas, 22-10, in the Cup Semi-final to book their place in the final against Western Province.

The Blue Bulls women also started the tournament strongly as they defeated Eastern Province 40-0, but they went down 19-17 against the Golden Lions in their second match. They bounced back strongly, however, to defeat Boland 54-0 and the Pumas 47-0, which earned them a place in the Cup Quarter-final on Saturday.
