Sport highlights, 4 – 6 March
The rugby season starts building momentum now, the cricket season is not over yet and there are also international tennis action this weekend in Pretoria.
With the Varsity Cup tournament still reeling under the pressure of political opportunists, Pretoria’s rugby lovers are ready for the first SupeRugby match at Loftus Versfeld.
Rugby
The first SupeRugby action of the season at Loftus Versfeld takes place this Saturday, when the Bulls and the Rebels of Australia take each other on at 15:00.
The last round of league matches in the Assupol club series also takes place on Saturday. Harlequins play Pretoria Police, while Centurion will play Tukkies at home.
According to latest indications, it seems this year’s Varsity Cup tournament hangs in the balance. According to a declaration of the management of the series, matches will be postponed for another week, to give universities the chance to find a compromise with political agitators on campuses. Monday nights, scheduled game between Tuks and the NMMU Madibaz will only be played later.
Tennis
Tennis fans in Pretoria get the chance to see South Africa’s Davis Cup team in action this weekend. The team will go up against Luxembourg at the Irene Country Club for their Davis Cup Europe/Africa Group 2 tie from 4 to 6 March.
Play starts at 10:00 on Friday 4 March, and Sunday 6 March, at 12:00.
Soccer
The Premier league will be interrupted this week by games in the Nedbank Cup and two of Pretoria’s top teams will be in action.
The University of Pretoria (AmaTuks) plays against Polokwane City Rovers at the Tuks stadium on Saturday night. This game starts at 20:15.
Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to Tembisa to play against Highlands Park in the Makhulong stadium. This game takes place on Sunday, at 15:00.
SuperSport United will have to wait until Tuesday, for their game against Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville stadium.
Athletics
The route of the annual Medihelp Monster road race, which includes the 32km monster, a 10km mini monster and a 5km fun run, is not for the fainthearted, but the route is scenic, passing through 12 picturesque suburbs of Pretoria.
Starting times: Sunrise monster (32km): 06:03; mini monster (10km): 06:30; baby monster/Fun run (5km): 06:04.
The race starts and ends at Harlequins Club in Totiusstreet, Groenkloof.

Cricket
Contrary to what many people believe, the local cricket season is not over yet. There are several games still to be decided in the four day Sunfoil. The Titans play this week (3 to 5 March), against the Knights at SuperSport Park. The home team is still first in the log and would like to bring another trophy home for their supporters.
The Proteas also play this coming week in three T20 matches against Australia in preparation for the T20 World Cup which will start soon in India. The first game is on Friday 4 March, in Durban, on Sunday 6 March, in Johannesburg and the last game is next week Wednesday 9 March, in Cape Town.
