Another DRC test for Downs
Sundowns face a tough DRC test while Amatuks’ battle against the drop starts in earnest this weekend.
Mamelodi Sundowns travel to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to take on AS Vita on Saturday, in their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League campaign.
The Brazilians are through to the second round of the tournament after defeating AC Leopards 3-1 on aggregate a month ago.
The Pretoria side have done very well so far following their shock 1-0 defeat to Chicken Inn in their first game in the preliminary round.
’Downs coach Pitso Mosimane praised how his players approached the tournament.
Sundowns have arguably their best squad since 2001, when they lost in the CAF final to Al Ahly and if this team can surpass what their ‘golden generation’ achieved then, this could be the year an SA team lifts the trophy.
South African clubs have failed to progress further than the second round in the past 10 years but for Orlando Pirates.
In 1995, Pirates became the first SA team to lift the trophy, and three years ago, were losing finalists.
If Sundowns progresses, it will be a massive boost to local teams’ CAF ratings. A country with good ratings earns more spots in continental competitions. Currently four SA teams compete in CAF tournaments – the Confederation cup and Champions league. Another good showing by an SA team will result in the increase to spots allocated to the country.
Pitso Mosimane and his troops know that a win is vital in the DRC. The last time they played there, they were hammered by current holders TP Mazembe.
The PSL also resumes this weekend, after a three week break.
The improving University of Pretoria travel to the Harry Gwala to play Maritzburg United on Saturday.
The teams sit 15th and 16th in the table, respectively so this match will definitely prove vital come the end of the season.
Tuks desperately need a win to catch Cosmos who are in 14th place, and also open a four-point gap between themselves and their hosts.
If they draw, this will likely result in both teams being dragged into the relegation scrap.
Supersport United host Chippa United at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville.
Matsatsantsa have had a disappointing season thus far claiming a mere eight wins from 22 games so the hot red Chilli Boys will be looking to pile more misery on Stuart Baxter and his men following their 2-2 draw against Maritzburg three weeks ago.
