Wet weather fails to stop fun at bike race in Centurion
Wet weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of participants in the first Leriba Lodge Family Cycle Race at the weekend.
The very first Leriba Lodge Family Cycle Race was presented in Centurion at the weekend.
Despite almost 50mm of rain in the area, 24 hours before the race, riders and mountain bike enthusiasts from all over Pretoria and further afield participated.
There were enough participants to divide the field into four groups, starting five minutes apart. These groups were divided according a ranking system and the top riders, which included some professional participants who were set off first.
Riders followed the 30km route, which started and finished at Leriba Lodge. Most of the route was a single track through rough terrain of the Swartkop Air Force base. The wet conditions made the route more difficult, but some participants said they enjoyed this challenge.
The race was won by a local rider Hugh Webb of the LCB Racing team. He was followed by the young Johan Oosthuizen from Hoërskool Waterkloof, while Isak van der Merwe from Centurion finished in third place.
Peet du Preez, owner and managing director of Leriba Lodge told Rekord he was happy with the turnout and wanted the race to be an annual event. He said the race was already registered as an official event with Cycling SA and he believed it could grow into one of the favourite races in Gauteng.
The event also took the form of a family celebration and cyclists could enjoy a braai with their families afterwards on the quiet grounds of Leriba Lodge next to the Hennops river.
