Sport Highlights, 27 May to 29 May
A few majour sporting events will keep sports fans glued to their TV sets this weekend.
The IPL final, the Nedbank Cup football final, two big South African rugby derbies and the Comrades marathon are some of the major sports events that South Africans can look forward to this weekend.
Cricket
After nearly two months of action, the Indian Premier League (IPL) finally comes to its climax this weekend, with the final on Sunday.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team of AB de Villiers and David Wiese, is already through to the final. They will play on Sunday against the winner of the semifinal, which will be played between Dale Steyn’s Gujarat Lions and either the Sunrisers Hyderabad (without South Africans) or the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Rugby
Two important local derbies are on the menu for rugby lovers this weekend. The Stormers and Cheetahs will play in Cape Town at 15:00 on Saturday. The men from the Free State have a good track record at Newlands, but the Stormers cannot afford to lose this one.
The second derby will be played at Loftus Versfeld, where the Bulls will meet the Lions in the so-called Trans Jukskei river derby at 17:05. These two teams are currently South Africa’s top SupeRugby teams and a massive battle is expected at Loftus.
* The second round of the Carlton Cup also starts this weekend with a few interesting games. Centurion play at home against Police, Tuks travel to Rustenburg to take on Impala, and Harlequins will play host to Naka Bulls. The Dragons has a bye.
Soccer
The only big soccer action this coming weekend will be the final of the Nedbank Cup, played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. SuperSport United plays against Orlando Pirates in this game on Saturday afternoon at 15:00. If SuperSport United manage to win this game, it will be the second big soccer trophy that comes to Pretoria this season, after Mamelodi Sundowns won the Premier League two weeks ago.
Athletics
Although a few minor races will be presented to keep runners on the road this weekend, the city’s best road athletes will be in KwaZulu-Natal for the 2016 Comrades marathon on Sunday. This year the Comrades is a down-run, starting in Pietermaritzburg and ending in Durban. Pretorians will hope that South Africa’s current road running sensation, Caroline Wöstmann, will succeed in achieving her second consecutive victory in the women’s division.
Tennis
The French tennis open tournament started last weekend and at the time of writing this preview there had been no major upsets. The tournament is however, known for shocks when top-seeded players are eliminated early. Therefore, keep an eye on the action this weekend, especially if you prefer to follow the action on TV.
