Menlopark sets pace for Spur Schools Mountain Bike season
The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League is a programme focused on growing the number of children on mountain bikes by running interschool mountain biking races around the country.
The Gauteng leg of the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League got off to a great start with 671 riders representing 58 schools competing in the first event of the season presented by Anatomic at Phoenix High School in Vereeniging.
Defending national school champions, Hoërskool Menlopark made their mark early in the season ending the day at Spur Tour de Vaal with 297 points and four leader jerseys in the Junior Men, Junior Women, Youth 16 Boys and Youth 15 Girls categories. Afrikaans Hoër Seunsskool was second with 222, followed by Transvalia High School with 210, Waterkloof Hoërskool with 197 and Midstream College in fifth position with 190 points.
Wessel Botha of Menlopark won the Junior Men category with team mate Henry Liebenberg in second. Jason Abbott (Woodhill College) took the third podium spot.
The Junior Women category was won by Saffron Vosloo (Menlopark) with Lynette Benson (Waterkloof) in a close second and Rosmarie Oellermann (Waterkloof) in third.
In the Youth 16 Boys race, Chris du Plessis (Menlopark) took line honours followed by Jean-Pierre Lloyd (Zwartkop) in second and Keagan Bontekoning (Maragon Private) in third, while Thana Groenewald (Midstream College) won the girls race with Azulde Britz (Cornwall Hill College) second and Nicola Van der Walt (Menlopark HS) in third.
Hennie van Wyk (Garsfontein) and Monique du Toit (Menlopark) respectively won the Youth 15 Boys and Girls races followed by Matthiam Hofmann (Waterkloof) and Antonique Grotsius (Menlopark) second and DJ Kruger (Transvalia) and Robin Stewart (Waterkloof) in third.
The Sub Junior Boys top three riders were Miguel Moutinho (Midstream), Jaedon Terlouw (St Albans College) and Pieter-Jan Pretorius (Afrikaans Hoër Seunsskool). Natalie Long (Transvalia), Jade Slabbert (Midstream College) and Kaylin Gombos (Transvalia) filled the top three slots in the Girls Sub Junior race.
This year Gauteng introduced a two day event format with Friday serving as a course practice day where riders got special skills advice from qualified Cycle Lab skills instructors in preparation for race day.
