Irene Homes packs SPAR Women’s Challenge goodie bags with love and gratitude
This year’s SPAR Woman’s Race theme is gratitude and at this time of year there is no better place to see this in action than at Irene Homes.
The race organisers of the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge have once again awarded the massive task of packing 25000 goodie bags in time for race day to long standing race beneficiary Irene Homes.
This year everyone involved is showing the true spirit of what it means to be grateful.
Workers in the Irene Homes contract centre have been taking delivery of goodie bag products from the long list of suppliers since the beginning of June and officially started packing on 6 July.
“The reality that the race is now just around the corner has started to sink in. The excitement in the contract centre has started to build as the workers need to plan and organise for space to store the products while the regular projects still need to continue,” said Estelle van Schoor, CEO of Irene Homes.
This year’s race theme is gratitude and at this time of year there is no better place to see this in action than at Irene Homes. As they were packing the goodie bags, Van Schoor investigated what they each feel grateful for and their answers included gratitude for what they receive at Irene Homes including care, that fact that this is their home, the opportunity to do a job and for the love they receive. Others said they are grateful for the fact that Irene Homes is their “family and friends” and that within the homes they are “accepted as human beings with a right to live their lives as they choose”. Some said they are grateful the atmosphere at Irene Homes and the “physical surroundings of trees and flowers”.
Van Schoor said that she – and everyone at Irene Homes – is grateful for the fact that SPAR trusts them to carry out this task year after year and for the huge opportunity for people who are intellectually disabled to be able to work on a special project.
“Thank you to SPAR for all the treats and for spoiling our beneficiaries during the packing of the bags. The SPAR Women’s Challenge is a positive and powerful event in the lives of many organisations such as Irene Homes and individuals,” Van Schoor concluded.
