Sundowns capture ‘big fish’ Vilakazi
South Africa's top midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi has signed with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mamelodi Sundowns will again be a team to beat this season after signing the highly gifted Sibusiso Vilakazi at the weekend.
The Soweto-born midfielder is arguably the most in-demand player locally after being named the player of the 2014/15 season.
The Brazilians announced on Sunday, that Vilakazi had penned his signature following months of speculation.
The 26-year-old has spent seven years at Bidvest Wits and despite various reports linking him to a move abroad, it was the Brazilians that finally captured the Bafana Bafana man.
By doing so, they edged out Kaizer Chiefs, who had been eyeing Vilakazi since his breakthrough season, but last month Bidvest Wits made it very clear they didn’t want their player to sign for the Soweto Giants.
Sundowns also signed central defender Ricardo Nascimento and midfielder Lucky Mohomi.
The president of Mamelodi Sundowns, Patrice Motsepe, welcomed Vilakazi to the team.
“We are excited to welcome Vilakazi to the Mamelodi Sundowns family. We have been monitoring him for quite some time and I am confident that he will make a huge contribution to the growth and success of Sundowns.”
“We are now taking a longer time monitoring and assessing players who we think will fit in with our style and culture of play before we acquire them,” said Motsepe on the club’s website.
