Sport Highlights 29 – 31 July
Sport lovers in South Africa will have to choose between the SupeRugby semi-final at Ellispark and the Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium, because these two games will take place at the same time on Saturday.
All South Africa’s rugby fans will probably support the Lions this weekend since they are the only local team remaining in the SupeRugby tournament.
Rugby
After last week’s humiliating beatings the Stormers and the Sharks encountered from New Zealand teams, SA rugby fans will probably unite behind the Lions. The men from Johannesburg will play in the second SupeRugby semi-final on Saturday against the defending champions, Highlanders. This game starts at 15:00 and will be played at Emirates Airlines Park (Ellispark) in Johannesburg.
For local rugby lovers there is the Carlton semifinals at Loftus Versfeld to look forward to. At 15:00 the first game between Pretoria Police and Centurion will kick off. This game will be followed by the second semifinal between Tukkies and Naka Bulls, starting at 17:00. Both games will be played at the B-field at Loftus Versfeld.
Cricket
While some of South Africa’s top players are still involved at the Caribbean Premier League, the South African A team start their tour in Australia with the first unofficial test against Australia A. It is a four-day game (30 July to 2 August), but South Africans who want to follow it directly on TV will have to stay up all night, because the action starts just after midnight.
Soccer
The local soccer season kicks off this weekend with a big Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB stadium in the Carling Black Label Cup. This game will start at 15:00 on Saturday.
Golf
Believe it or not, but we are already at the fourth ‘major’ golf tournament of the year, which will start on Thursday next week. The PGA Championship will be played at the Baltustol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey, in America this year. More about local players involved at the tournament in next week’s highlights.
Athletics
The Denel Athletics Club will present their annual Zwartkop half marathon this weekend. The event consist of a 21,1km half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. The races will start and end at the Swartkop Lapa in Centurion. The two longer races will be set off at 07:00, while the fun run will be set off at 07:10.
