It is time for Varsity Netball
Now in its fourth season, Varsity Netball is about to take centre court again.
For the fourth year in succession, Varsity Sports will bring one of the most popular sports in South Africa to life.
Matches, beginning on 5 September will be played at three venues across South Africa.
There is no lack of netball talent in the country, as with so many other sports in the South Africa. But Varsity Netball will lay a platform for these talented ladies to show us their vibrancy and showcase their skills, while their universities have the opportunity to rally behind their teams. And everyone will have the opportunity to show their colours.
“We see Varsity Netball as the incubator for Netball SA,” said Blanche De La Guerre, CEO of Netball SA.
“Our dream is that every school-leaving girl may get an opportunity to play in such a well organised and perfectly structured environment, which Varsity Sports offers.”
Over the past three years the number of national netball players to emerge from Varsity Netball has increased. An increase in game time for the players, while gaining exposure in live TV matches and helping them grow accustomed to the professional environment that international players have to adapt to, has been beneficial to South African netball at the highest level.
Eleven Proteas players have graced the Varsity Netball tournament over the past three years and that number is expected to increase. The majority of the current Proteas squad is expected to take part in Varsity Netball’s 2016 season.
Recent results by top netball teams, including the national side, have underlined the success of Varsity Netball’s platform.
“At the recent 2016 World University Netball Championship in Miami, the South African Student team were crowned champions, and we were proud to celebrate the fact that the entire team and management was comprised of Varsity Netball players and coaches,” said Jana Arlow, Varsity Netball code manager.
“These ladies are truly an inspiration for young players coming through the school systems. They play with such passion and love for the game and will certainly do their universities proud during the 2016 Varsity Netball tournament,” Arlow concluded.
Over the past two seasons, the tagline for the competition has been “Show Your Colours”, something that encapsulates the spirit of the university competition and the manner in which supporters get behind their teams, as the players wear their university colours with pride.
