Emerging young boxer gets chance to make his breakthrough
This weekend's Call to Glory boxing tournament at Emperors Palace offers one of Pretoria's most promising young boxers a chance to give his career a boost.
One of Pretoria’s most exciting young professional boxers, Cowin Ray, will on Saturday in Kempton Park get his chance to establish himself as a possibly future contender for the national middleweight title.
Ray, a product of Sebastiaan Rothmann’s Elite Boxing Gym in Pretoria, will fight against the more experienced Jade Karam in Golden Gloves’ Call to Glory tournament at Emperors Palace.
After four fights, the young Pretorian is still unbeaten in his professional career. Saturday, however, he will be up against a very good opponent who will thoroughly test him for the first time in the professional arena.
Karam already has 19 fights under his belt since the beginning of his professional career in 2015. It will also be his first fight in South Africa after his yearlong stay in Ireland, where he got into the ring five times.
Ray had a very successful amateur career during which he won Gauteng North and Gauteng titles. He hits very hard for a middleweight boxer and has won three of his four professional fights with knockouts. He is best known for his dangerous left hook with which he shook many opponents since his amateur days.
The young upcoming star is a product of the Woodhill College in Pretoria and he is the son of former heavyweight professional boxer, Basil Ray.
* There is also great interest in the main battle of Saturday’s tournament at Emperors Palace. The former IBO light heavyweight champion, Tommy Oosthuizen, return to the ring after an inactive period of about 15 months.
At a press conference earlier this week Oosthuizen, who struggled with many personal problems, looked fit and ready to resume his career. He was regarded as South Africa’s most promising young boxer a few years ago and he had the potential to become an international superstar.
He experienced problems with drugs and alcohol abuse, which also led to problems with law enforcement authorities. However, Oosthuizen seems to have defeated his demons. He is apparently back on the right path and on Saturday he will have the chance to prove himself as a cruiserweight boxer against the former African Boxing Union cruiserweight champion, Thabiso Mchunu.
* Another veteran, former South African light heavyweight champion Ryno Liebenberg, will also be in action on Saturday night. Liebenberg will fight the promising 26-year old Alfonso Tissen. The vacant African Boxing Union Super Middleweight title will be at stake in this fight.
