Blue Bulls to present exciting coaching summit
Experienced and less experienced rugby coaches could all benefit from the Coaching Summit presented by the Blue Bulls Coaching Association and the Tuks Rugby Academy in the week before the Springboks Test against the All Blacks at Loftus Versfeld.
Rugby coaching became a refined science in the professional era and the days when one or two coaches could train a champion team are indeed over.
Specialists in certain aspects of the game are increasingly used in the modern era. This trend is not only seen with professional teams, but even at club and school teams.
The Blue Bulls Coaching Association recently identified the need to present a summit in which all aspects of coaching in the modern era can be analysed and addressed in order to guide both established as well as young and aspiring coaches with decision making about their own approach.
This association will therefore be hosting a coaching summit in Pretoria in conjunction with the Tuks Rugby Academy on 3 and 4 October.
“We have put together this summit with the aim of providing coaches with the opportunity to gain exposure to the professional setting as well as an opportunity to enrich their knowledge,” said Dr. Eugene Hare, CEO of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, at a media conference where the event was announced.
Blikkies Groenewald, chairman of the Blue Bulls Coaching Association, said the summit was not meant to replace any official coaching course.

“We have gathered a lot of specialists to give attendees at the summit more detailed information about different aspects of modern rugby coaching,” said Groenewald.
Respected and well-known names in rugby coaching will gather from all over South Africa to be part of the summit.
There is especially excitement about the contribution of former All Black legend Justin Marshall, who will address the summit on the theme “The All Black Approach”.
Other interesting contributions will come from men like Henning Gericke (well-known sport psychologist); the team from JVL Nutrition, Jannie Brooks (Strength and Conditioning); Blitzboks coach Neil Powel (Modern trends in 7’s coaching); world renowned sprinting coach Hennie Kriel (Coaching high performance athletes in comparison with rugby); Jimmy Stonehouse (Training methods and picking up the tempo during matches); Blikkies Groenewald (Contesting the breakdown point); Pote Human (Structuring and mauling in modern line-outs); and SA Rugby director of coaching Hilton Adonis (Coaching pathway for SA coaches).
The summit will also be addressed by four members of the current Springbok management team, namely Rassie Erasmus, Matt Proudfoot, Swys de Bruin and Jacques Nienaber.
