Sparks will fly at second ‘Battle of the Warriors’ boxing tournament in Pretoria
Sunday’s ‘Battle of the Warriors 2’ boxing tournament at the Sun Arena in Pretoria promises to entertain boxing enthusiasts with top action and, judging from the bouts on the program, spectators can expect a few knockouts.
Seven exciting boxing fights – including two heavyweight battles and a junior heavyweight (cruiserweight) fight – await Pretorians when the ‘Battle of the Warriors 2’ boxing tournament takes place on Sunday afternoon (21 October) in the Sun Arena in Pretoria.
Although the promoters had to cancel the third heavyweight battle of the tournament between Vlad Sirenko of Ukraine and Rogelio Rossi from Argentina, the action should still produce a lot of excitement and probably also a few knock-outs.
Due to administrative problems Rossi could not get permission to enter South Africa, and his fight with Sirenko – to which many boxing experts were looking forward in anticipation – had to be cancelled a few days ago.
Apart from the long-awaited return to the ring of the South African Heavyweight champion Ruann Visser, the promising young heavyweight Joshua Pretorius from Richards Bay will also be in action against the more experienced Nhlanganipho Gwamanda from Tembisa.
Another promising young fighter, Chris Thompson from Johannesburg, will be in action in a cruiserweight bout against Didier Nyembwe from the DRC. Nyembwe is better known as an MMA fighter, but he can also be very dangerous in the boxing ring.
The tournament kicks off at 13:00 on Sunday afternoon with a super featherweight battle between Kaizer Fokasa and Ephraim Mkahtswa.
Then follows the bantamweight battle between Ayabonga Sonjika and Nasiphe Mdlangaza.
The third battle of the tournament is another featherweight bout between Onke Duku and Denyz Lazarev from the Ukraine.
The exciting lightweight boxer from the Ukraine, Vladizlav Baranov, will fight in the penultimate and sixth battle of the tournament against Clement Kamanga from the DRC.
Lastly, the main battle will follow, for which – according to indications – many boxing enthusiasts will travel to Pretoria from all over Gauteng.
The South African heavyweight champion, Ruann Visser – or The Giant King, as he is also known –will be up against the relatively unknown Luke Sutherland in this main battle.
Visser is very excited to be able to climb through the ropes again after his struggle against the South African Institute for Drugfree Sport (SAIDS), who falsely accused him of using steroids.
However, it would be advisable for the Visser camp not to underestimate Sutherland. At an earlier media function, he told Rekord that he prefers to be treated as the underdog. Yet, he displayed a fair degree of confidence in his own abilities and he has already shown in his amateur career that he is a hard hitter who can do damage if his opponent’s defence is not up to standard.
Visser, however, has the advantage of a better reach, as well as a relative benefit in terms of height and weight. He has also looked very sharp and fit in training sessions before the fight.
Tickets for the tournament are still available at Computicket or on Sunday at the venue. The action starts at 13:00.
