Young student makes breakthrough on cricket field

The student life of a young Tuks cricketer will be very busy in the following months after he signed a professional contract with the Titans.

The Titans has built a reputation in recent years for their ability to attract the country’s best young talent to SuperSport Park.

One of the latest additions to the Titans players group is the former South Africa under-19 star, Wandile Makwetu.

The 19-year old batsman is also a serious student between his busy schedule as an emerging cricketer. He is studying towards his Bachelor of Commerce (B. Comm.) degree at the University of Pretoria.

Makwetu, born in Cape Town and raised in Johannesburg, started playing cricket at the tender age of six. He played for the Gauteng Under-13s, and made his first-class debut for Northern Districts in the 2017–18 Sunfoil Three-Day Cup.

“To play for my country at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup was really a special feeling. It was a huge honour and privilege being part of the squad and being able to travel the world,” said the new Titans batsman.

Makwetu he cannot stop talking about his love and passion for cricket.

“The first time I picked up a bat I just fell in love with the game. The time spent together with friends on the field and the technical difficulty associated with batting, really excites me. It’s a challenge that can be overcome with hard work and dedication. To me is the best aspect of the game is being part of a brotherhood in a team,” he explained.

Although he was initially a Capetonian and later lived in Johannesburg, Makwetu is very happy in Pretoria these days.

“I’ve been living at one of the CampusKey student accommodation centres – which is conveniently located between the university’s main campus and the Tuks cricket club at the LC de Villiers sports grounds – since the beginning of the year and really enjoy the environment,” he said.

According to Makwetu his greatest achievement thus far would be signing his first professional contract with the Titans Cricket Team. Like any other young cricket player, he is dreaming of the next step – to play for the Proteas.
