Pretoria is getting ready for national cycling championship
After the success of the Tshwane Classic bike race, Pretoria will this weekend once again have the chance to welcome the country's best cyclists on the city's roads from Thursday 7 February to Sunday 10 February.
Gauteng North Cycling and Cycling SA is hosting the most prestigious road cycling event in South Africa from 7-10 February 2019 in Pretoria.
This event, the South African National Road and Time Cycling Championship, taking place over four days, is divided into a Time Trail and Road Race at two separate venues.
The Time Trail will take place at Rooiwal in the northern rural part of the Tshwane area. Then the road race will follow, which will be presented at the Union Buildings in the city.
According to an official statement from the organizers, this prestige national sporting event is supported by City of Tshwane, and forms part of the City’s initiative to become a world class city of choice for national and international sporting events.
Some of South Africa’s very best cyclists will be involved in this race. This includes Darryll Impey, current SA national champion, Tour de France rider and first ever back to back winner of 2018 and 2019 Australian Tour Down Under.
Defending SA women’s champion, Carla Oberholzer, will also be back to defend her title.
The Individual Time Trial, taking place on Thursday 7 February and Friday 8 February, near the Rooiwal power station north of Pretoria, sees the first of two days of racing.
The Rooiwal road around the vicinity of the Grootvlei Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk will be closed for this event, with Tshwane Metro Police officials assisting on the two designated days.
The second part of the event is the Road Race on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 February.
The race consists of a 10km lap around the landmark Union Buildings, and includes a climb up the iconic – and feared by cyclists – Tom Jenkins Drive.
Total road closure is implemented for the Road Race and therefore the organizers are asking residents of the areas around Rietondale, Soutpansberg Road and the Union Buildings to please take note and be patient for the duration of the two days of racing.
Roads which will be influenced are: Tom Jenkins Drive (closed in both directions), Soutpansberg Road (from Gordon Road to Hamilton Street), Hamilton Street, Edmund Street, Government Avenue, Dumbarton Road, Stanza Bopape Street (from Dumbarton Road to Gordon Road), and then finally, Gordon Road (from Stanza Bopape to Soutpansberg Road).
